Hannah Jeong

2020 Visual Arts Scholarship Recipient

Hannah has always recognized the significance of art in her life and is determined to continue creating no matter what the future holds. From a young age, she immersed herself in artistic pursuits, constantly filling sketchbooks and exploring various mediums. In second grade, joining a neighborhood art class expanded her skills and introduced her to new materials and subjects, fostering a deep love for art. Despite losing her teacher, Hannah spent the next four years honing her craft independently, embracing different art forms like digital animation, embroidery, and fashion design. The challenge of self-guided exploration ignited her excitement and creativity.

Art became Hannah's means of communication and connection, particularly during her shy and reserved childhood. It provided a way for her to initiate friendships and engage with others in a manner she couldn't otherwise. In 7th grade, she achieved recognition as the New Hampshire state finalist in the Doodle for Google competition, based on her dream of becoming a fashion designer. However, as she entered the competition again the following year, she felt disconnected from her art, sensing that she was creating to impress rather than expressing her true voice. Seeking a mentor or opportunity that would challenge and inspire her, Hannah longed for a deeper connection to her artistry.

Taking an Intro to Drawing university course last semester proved to be a turning point for Hannah. Learning from a professor and fellow art enthusiasts, she relished the independence, tackled more challenging assignments, and explored styles beyond her comfort zone by observing the work of her peers. With a desire to continue growing as an artist, she will be attending the School of the Art Institute of Chicago Summer Institute Residency Program: Experimental Drawing. Hannah sees the AQF scholarship as an invaluable opportunity to work closely with accomplished art faculty and fellow artists, which would otherwise be out of reach. She is very grateful for the Anthony Quinn Foundation support of young artists and the commitment to nurturing their artistic journeys.
