India Murphy

2014 Visual Arts Scholarship Recipient

India describes herself as a storyteller and emphasizes the conceptual nature of her work. Her current series, Lost Chicago, delves into the idea of a potential future as a resident in a local purgatory, drawing inspiration from Nelson Algren's "City on the Make," Daniel Burnham's architecture, Chicago's geographical features, and the opulent mansions of industrialists. By combining her interests in skewed perspective, dream logic, and cohesive concepts, India has created an environment that captivates her exploration. As the narrative unfolded, Lost Chicago evolved into a fully developed realm, inspiring her to embark on the creation of a graphic novel set in this imaginative space.

Narratives play a significant role in India's artistic expression, as she seeks to illustrate thoughts, ideas, and concepts to gain a deeper understanding of them. She also finds herself creating drawings for others, further reinforcing her belief in the power of visual storytelling. To enhance her abilities and fully realize her artistic vision, India aims to attend the RISD Pre-College program with an illustration major. She believes that the program's rigorous curriculum will not only refine her skills but also provide her with the necessary tools to effectively create and express narratives.

India's passion for storytelling and her desire to deepen her artistic capabilities shine through her description of her work and aspirations. By attending the RISD Pre-College program, she hopes to refine her skills, broaden her understanding of narratives, and unlock her potential as an illustrator. Her commitment to creating meaningful and conceptually-driven art demonstrates her dedication to her craft and her eagerness to explore new avenues of artistic expression.
