Brandon Hou

2012 Instrumental Scholarship Recipient

Brandon's life has been immersed in music from an early age, with both of his parents sharing a deep love for the art form. Beginning piano lessons at the tender age of four and later adding violin lessons at seven, music has become the cornerstone of Brandon's existence. For the past twelve years, music has been his primary focus, and he cannot fathom a day without it. Although there are moments when practicing feels challenging, he recognizes that hard work and dedication are essential in preparing him for a future career in music. Brandon acknowledges the unwavering support of his teachers and parents, which has laid the foundation for his profound appreciation of the art.

While Brandon has achieved success in various violin and piano competitions, he has come to realize that music goes beyond accolades. It touches the depths of the soul. The late-night sessions playing the works of Chopin, Beethoven, or Bach and the moments when a particular measure evokes a listener's emotion or sparks a fond memory have taught him the true essence of music. It enriches the soul and reaffirms our humanity.

Looking ahead, Brandon envisions himself both performing and teaching music in the next ten years. He plans to pursue a major in music performance, specializing in either violin or piano, and continue his studies at the graduate level. Teaching music or directing an orchestra holds great appeal to him, as he finds joy in sharing his passion with others, particularly children. Through volunteering with his quartet, performing in retirement homes, YMCA clubs, and libraries, he witnesses the impact of music on people's lives, even if only for a brief moment. Brandon believes that if they can influence and bring music to future generations, their time would be well spent
