Stephanie Chang

2019 Literary Arts Scholarship Recipient

Stephanie, despite growing up in a community that prioritizes STEM fields, has embraced her love for poetry. She regularly participates in poetry slams, frequents used bookstores in search of chapbooks, and identifies herself as a poet. Her poetry delves into themes such as her family's history, the politics of being an Asian LGBTQ+ individual, and intersectional experiences, aiming to translate identity into meaningful language and epiphanies.

Stephanie will attend the Iowa Young Writers' Studio, specifically interested in the specialized poetry course it offers. The structure of the program, with its Seminar and Workshop components, appeals to her as it allows for exploration, analysis, and critique of both established and personal poetry. She hopes to expand her appreciation for poetry written on different subjects, and the Studio's activities like the Stretch and Observatories offer opportunities to engage with new perspectives and generate creative revolutions.

Beyond the instructional aspect, Stephanie desires the supportive and nurturing environment the Studio provides. She looks forward to sharing her work in a safe space and experimenting with unconventional concepts under the guidance of experienced writers. The chance to attend readings by visiting authors is also appealing, as it would expose her to a diverse range of voices and expand her understanding of poetry, prompting her to restructure her craft and broaden her writer's lens.
